I had the pleasure of being a member of the Youth Centre Support Committee that looked at opportunities for a Youth Centre to be located in Wasaga Beach. Along with staff I toured other facilities, spoke to youth about their needs and looked at potential locations in our town.

The Youth Centre opened its doors for the first time in November 2010 on a two year trial basis. After a very successful two years, Council approved the Youth Centre being a permanent facility in our community in October 2012.

The Youth Centre has provided a safe place for our youth to make friends, learn social skills, develop self-esteem and confidence, meet positive role models and provided opportunities for the youth to give back to their community.

The Community as a whole has been very supportive of this initiative and our youth. Donations, volunteers and partnerships with our schools, community groups, YMCA and local businesses have added greatly to the success of our Youth Centre.

We have expanded into our schools providing youth programing at lunch times to reach out to youth who may not be aware of the youth centre or what we offer. Youth Centre Members have been trained by the Youth Centre Staff and assist as Youth Leaders at these lunch time sessions.

The Youth assist staff in fundraising efforts through their Grill Team providing BBQ and treats for sale at community events.

It is my goal to continue to reach out to our youth. If our community has empowered confident youth, Wasaga Beach will have strong future leaders.

Thank you to all the community members who have supported our youth!
