News – What’s Happening

COUNCIL MEET AND MINGLE:

Mark your calendars for Saturday June, 4th and plan on attending Council’s meet and mingle at our Sports Park from noon until 2pm. Fantastic playground, so bring the kids! Come and speak one on one with Council members. Ask questions and share your ideas for Wasaga Beach!

AFFORDABLE HOUSING:

I am the Vice Chair of the County of Simcoe’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee. This committee is tasked with looking to improve the affordable housing situation in Simcoe County.

Gisele Winton Sarvis from the Enterprise Bulletin provided a great write up in the EB on January 19th, 2016 if you would like to read more on this it can be found on their website.

The goal of the 10 year project is to create at least 2,685 affordable units by 2024. The target for Wasaga Beach is 110 units.

The committee is continuing to reach out to our Simcoe County municipal councils, developers and landlords as we need to work together to meet the needs of residents.

These will not be all new builds, but also includes things such as subsidized rent support as well as secondary suites. There is a lot more work to be done!

I read in Gisele’s article that Mayor Smith toured Wasaga Beach with Warden Marshall looking at potential properties. I wish I had known that meeting was happening as I would have loved to have been included.

FIREFIGHTER AWARDS:

At the January 26, 2016 Council meeting it was a pleasure to see so many of our firefighters receiving awards. Congratulations to all and thank you for your service!

LAND DONATION FOR A HOSPITAL:

As per the February 2, 2016 media release the Town Council has approved the donation of a 25 acre parcel of land to be considered for a new regional hospital.

In the event that the Province supports building a new hospital in a new location I think it would be great if Wasaga Beach was the successful location.

However, at the end of the day the most important thing is that our REGION has a hospital that can provide our residents great service and meet our health care needs. We will all benefit from a new hospital regardless of where it is located in the region and we all need to work together to make that happen!
